About

  • Master stone carver Barbara Ségal is dedicated to a conceptually driven interdisciplinary art practice that produces intricate two-dimensional and three-dimensional multimedia sculptures of various sizes. Her work draws inspiration from childhood experiences, particularly the loss of her father, and explores themes of iconography, gender roles, femininity, materialism, and consumer culture.

Ségal integrates education and activism into her public artworks, raising awareness of local histories through socially engaged practices. Her sculptures combine traditional Italian carving techniques with contemporary technology, a synthesis honed during her studies in Carrara, Italy, in the 1970s, among renowned artists like Isamu Noguchi and Augustin Cardenas

Her expertise in digital sculpting allows her to challenge the boundaries of conventional sculpture while referencing ancient practices, including hieroglyphics from Egypt. Many of her works feature gold leaf and plaster, paying homage to Egyptian, Byzantine, and Roman art. Ségal’s sculptures reflect her deep connection to historical traditions, drawing inspiration from Renaissance, Byzantine, and Edwardian art and architecture. She advances history through her commitment to ancient practices and the joy of working with her hands.
